About the Triathlon Division

The Making Waves Triathlon Group is a division of the Making Waves Swim Club.  Members swim with the Making Waves Swim Club on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and coordinate workouts with the Edmonton ArticFront Runners.

Additional activities include additional workouts, transition training, triathlon discussions, and coordination supports for various triathlon races.

If you are interested in joining this group, please send your contact information to the Triathlon Coordinator at triathlon@teamedmonton.ca so we can send out information as needed about the group.

Registration Form
The triathon group uses the same registration form as the swimming group.  Click on Practices/Fees to download the form.

Fees
All triathlon division members must pay an annual $35 fee to be a registered Adult member of the Alberta Triathlon Association.  Although the club collects this fee, it is paid directly to Alberta Triathlon Association to cover the cost of disability and accident insurance and to support the development and improvement of the quality of races, programs, and services for Alberta's multi-sport athletes.

This is a seperate annual fee from the swimming fees.

Who can join?
Any member of the Making Waves Swim Club can participate in the triathlon workouts.  No experience is needed.  You do not need to participate in all three sports to join the group.  Triathlons can be done as a relay.

Coaching
The swims on Tuesday and Thursday will be coached by the club.  Saturday's swims will not be coached, although workouts will be provided.  We will have different people plan and lead each ride, spin group and run, but they will not be coached.  There are members of the group who have done every length of triathlon from "try-a-tri" up to Ironman, so there will be lots of opportunity to learn from each other and try different workouts.

Races
The group will decide together what races to do.  You can of course do any other races you choose to as well.  Once we have chosen our races, we can tailor the workout schedule to make sure we peak at the right time.

There are lots more available as well.  Don't forget that you can participate as part of a relay team as well.

Workouts
The workouts will tentatively be:

  • Sunday 10:00am - Run with Arctic Frontrunners (Kinsmen Sports Centre/Emily Murphy Park)
  • Monday 6:30pm - Bike (Location TBA)
  • Tuesday 7:30pm - Swim with Making Waves
  • Wednesday - Off
  • Thursday 7:00pm - Swim with Making Waves
  • Friday 5:30pm - Run (Location TBA)
  • Saturday 10:30am - Swim (Peter Hemingway)
  • Saturday 12:00pm - Bike (Peter Hemingway)

This is a tentative schedule that will be updated on the Making Waves Calendar.  It will be adjusted based on when the majority of participants are available.  As we get closer to our chosen goal races, we will adjust the schedule and add outdoor rides when needed.

Equipment
You need the following as a minimum:

  • Swimming - swim suit and goggles
  • Running - a good pair of running shoes
  • Cycling - a bike and helmet.  You can usually do a sprint or even an Olympic distance with a mountain bike or hybrid.  For anything longer, you will need a road bike or triathlon bike.  To participate in the indoor spinning, you will also need a spin trainer.

Triathlon Camp
Depending on interest, we would also like to plan a one-week trip to Penticton to train in the triathlon capital of Canada.  This would include:

  • Swimming - Oliver Outdoor Pool (2-3 workouts)
  • Running - A variety of speed, distance and transition runs.
  • Cycling - The Wall ride, Naramata ride, Ironman ride, and Amex Mountain climb ride.

More details to follow.
